The communities of Fulda, Kratzberg and Huffman Mill, along with the Historic St. Boniface Catholic Church, will hold a celebration in honor of Spencer County’s bicentennial on Saturday, September 29.
The day-long event will feature music, food, historic tours, children’s activities and prizes.
The celebration opens at 1 p.m. Central Time on the parish grounds with a prayer and opening ceremony by American Legion Post 366.
Here are some of the events that will be held throughout the day:
1 and 3 p.m.: Guided tour of St. Boniface Catholic Church and cemetery, with an organist performing on the 1899 pipe organ. In 1980, the church became only the third Catholic church in Indiana named to the National Register of Historical Places.
Self-guided tours showcasing the history of the community, with costumed re-enactors on site to offer information about frontier life
2 p.m.: Performance by storyteller Susan Fowler
3 and 6 p.m.: Chain saw wood carving demonstrations, with the wooden pieces to be auctioned at 8:30 p.m. Proceeds from the auction will be used to establish an endowment for the Fulda Development Corporation through the Spencer County Community Foundation.
4 p.m.: Serving begins for barbecue chicken and pork chop dinners, dine in or carry out
5 p.m.: Mass at St. Boniface Church
Free children’s activities, in a secure area
Refreshment stands offering a variety of food and drink from local organizations, including homemade ice cream, and a beer garden
Musical entertainment: Kelly Clark and Leo Gronquist, 1-4 p.m.; Evie Mae, 4-5 p.m.; Overdrive, 7-11 p.m.
9-10 p.m.: Drawings for free door prizes (Victrola, $200 gift card to Big Splash Adventure, 58” Samsung Smart TV). You must be present to win.
Information booths where attendees can learn about the Indiana Covered Bridge Society, purchase the Spencer County bicentennial book, etc.
Proceeds will be used to establish a fund (endowment) for the perpetual care of Fulda, located in
Harrison Township in Spencer County, through the Spencer County Community Foundation. Sponsorship and other tax-deductible gifts to support the Highway 545 Bash may be directed to Historic St. Boniface Catholic Church, marked Fulda Endowment.
