Scripture Background
The Palm Sunday Gospel spans the events of Jesus’ last hours before his Death, starting with the Last Supper and concluding with the Crucifi xion. An important theme in this Scripture is the need for the Christian disciple to follow in the footsteps of Jesus. This theme is highlighted in the story of Simon of Cyrene, who takes up Jesus‘ Cross and carries it, and the large crowd—including many women—who follow Jesus (see Luke 9:26–27). As Jesus is nearing the end of his earthly ministry, we are reminded that to be his disciples, we must accompany him on the path to Calvary and remain faithful to him always.
Connecting Scripture and Doctrine
From the Catechism of the Catholic Church
As Jesus’ followers, we are called to proclaim the Good News. “The Paschal mystery of Christ’s cross and Resurrection stands at the center of the Good News that [we] are to proclaim to the world” (CCC, 571).
“Jesus freely offered himself for our salvation. ... During the Last Supper, he both symbolized this offering and made it really present: ‘This is my body which is given for you’ (Luke 22:19)” (CCC, 621).
