Old Testament: Sirach 27:4-7
Psalm 92
New Testament: 1 Corinthians 15:54-58
Gospel: Luke 6:39-45
Scripture Background
Sunday’s Gospel includes several sayings of Jesus that are vivid word pictures. The blind cannot lead the blind without both falling in a ditch. We should not focus on the splinter in our brother’s eye when we have a log in our own. A good tree produces good fruit. These sayings evoke images and are easy to remember. They offer us practical help in living as Jesus’ followers.
Connecting Scripture and Tradition
From the Catechism of the Catholic Church
“The education of the conscience is a lifelong task. … Prudent education teaches virtue; it prevents or cures fear, selfishness and pride, resentment arising from guilt, and feelings and complacency, born of human weakness and faults. The education of the conscience guarantees freedom and engenders peace of heart” (CCC, 1784).
“In the formation of conscience the Word of God is the light for our path” (CCC, 1785).
