Christ's whole life expresses his mission: 'to serve and to give his life as a ransom for many (CCC, 608).
We follow Jesus Christ by pouring out our lives in love and service as he did. We follow Jesus by living our baptism, as James and John do in the Gospel. It is in the Church, in communion with all the baptized, that Christians fulfill their vocations. (CCC, 2030).
In Sunday's Gospel, James and John seek powerful positions at Jesus' right and left in his kingdom. Their ambition presumes that Jesus is a warrior Messiah who will lead their country to a prominent place among nations. Jesus corrects their vision by questioning whether they can drink the cup he will drink and be baptized with the baptism he will receive. They assure Jesus, "We can."Indeed, James and John do give their lives to spreading the Gospel after Jesus' Resurrection from the dead. However, before that, these brash young men fall asleep in the garden when Jesus prays to be spared the cup of suffering. They flee at Jesus' arrest. They are on a journey with Jesus - with much more to learn about being his disciples. - Mark 10:35-45
